MATCH SUMMARY

February 21, 2012

Sheffield Steelers 5 Fife Flyers 1

Steelers took full advantage of the first of their five games in hand over league leaders Belfast to move to within seven points of Giants with a very comfortable stress free win over slumping Flyers in a game played at Ice Sheffield.

Steelers were able to rest starting goaltender John DeCaro in favour of Geoff Woolhouse and it was not until 14.42 of the final period that his shutout hopes were dashed.

For Flyers however, their Play-Off hopes look to be a long shot now as they slumped to a seventh straight loss and still seven points off the pace.

Steelers took the lead in the opening period with a strike by skipper Jonathan Phillips timed at 7.12 and went on to double their advantage at 15.41 thanks to the efforts of Neil Clark.

A couple of early second period goals ended the game as a contest with Mike Ramsay at 21.13 and Clark with his second 41 seconds later moving the score on to 4-0 and Steelers added a fifth at 28.48 from Jeff Legue to go in after forty minutes in complete control.

Little doubt Steelers eased up in the third session with an expected tough game coming up in Braehead on Friday night but to Flyers credit they kept plugging away and were rewarded at 54.42 when Steven Gunn fired home to complete the nights scoring.
